Eyelid Aesthetics

Our social interactions begin with eye-to-eye contact. Therefore, subtle changes around the eyes immediately catch our attention. Unfortunately, the negative effects of aging also begin to appear primarily around the eyes. Eyelid bags and wrinkles are both aging-related and hereditary. For hereditary bags that begin at an early age, surgery may be necessary even earlier.

So how does aging affect the eye area? It all starts with gravity. As we know, the forehead gradually begins to descend with age. This increases the pressure on the eyelids, causing them to droop.

As the thin membrane surrounding the fat bags around the eyes weakens with age, the fat bags bulge outward under their own weight.

As the soft tissues in the mid-face area sag downwards under the influence of gravity, deep lines under the eyes also become part of the process.

Eyelid surgery typically involves removing excess skin and fat pads from the upper eyelid. The situation is somewhat different for the lower eyelid. While excess fat pads are sometimes removed along with the excess skin in the lower eyelid area, other times, depending on the sagging of the midface, the fat may not be removed, but rather combined with the sagging fat in the midface to lift the midface upward.

Your doctor will discuss the technique with you and decide which one to use. This way, the area around your eyes, which can make you look older than you are, will appear fresher, younger, and more vibrant.
