Deviated Septum: What Is It and What are Its Symptoms?

Post Date: 9/29/2022

Septum deviation, also known as nasal bone curvature, is the displacement of the nasal septum between the nasal air passages. One becomes smaller compared to the other and is popularly understood as the curvature of the middle part of the nose. This part should be straight.

If the severity of this deformity is intense, chronic nasal congestion and breathing difficulties may occur. In addition, nasal congestion may also be experienced due to swelling which occurs because of curvature. Septum deviation surgery aims to eliminate this condition.

What Are the Symptoms of Deviated Symptom?

Nasal bone curvature may not show any symptoms in many cases. So, it is normal for a person not to know that they have a septum deviation. The characteristic symptoms of this condition are:

Noisy Breathing: This discomfort can occur during the day or during sleep at night. Due to the curvature and swelling, a wheezing sound is heard from the airway when breathing.

Nasal Cycle Awareness: The nasal cycle is the displacement of the nasal congestion side. First one side is blocked, after a certain time, the blockage passes to the other side. The patient suffering from deviation can easily recognize the nasal cycle condition.

Nasal Blockage (obstruction): Blockage of the nostrils: One or both of the nasal airways can be blocked. Congestion causes breathing difficulties.

Nose Bleeding: There may be a problem of drying and crusting on the surface of the nasal septum. This can cause nosebleeds.
