Differences Between Botox and Dermal Fillers

Post Date: 10/14/2022

Botox and dermal fillers are very popular cosmetic applications that are usually performed using injections in a clinic.
They are included in minimally invasive surgery, their procedure does not include surgery. Many people may think these two processes as the same, but this is the only similarity between them.
The popularity of Botox and filler applications can be understood by some numbers. According to the data published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 10 million people prefer one of the two applications. It can be easily said that the interest in these procedures grew rapidly since the millennium on a world scale.
Although their applications are similar, botox and dermal fillers are different in scope and effect. They are used on different areas of the body for different purposes, but they can also be applied together if needed.

What is Botox and What are Dermal Fillers?

Botox, an abbreviation for “Botulinum toxin” developed from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum, works by intensely stimulating some nerves in the human body. It creates temporary paralysis by blocking the signals to the nerves. It relaxes the muscles in the applied area, so it is possible to reduce or completely disappear wrinkles.
When it is injected into the neck area, it stimulates and softens the muscles that cause the face to fall due to the effect of gravity. It is also used effectively in the treatment of excessive sweating and migraine.
Dermal filler is the name of the medical substances injected to make the tissues more voluminous. Fillers containing hyaluronic acid are mostly preferred. With aging, the proportions of collagen and elastin in the skin decrease. This causes the skin to collapse and wrinkle. By using fillers, the skin looks more voluminous for a while.
Fillers can be applied to different areas such as the edges of the nose, lines between the nose and mouth, lips, radial lines around the lips, nose, under-eye pits, and under-eye bags. Before the procedure, the area is anesthetized with a cream and the filler is injected with tiny needles. A session takes an average of 20-30 minutes.

Botox or Dermal Fillers? How Will I Decide?

When the main differences between Botox and filler procedures are known, it is easier to decide which one to choose:

  • Botox is used to remove lines and wrinkles caused by facial expressions, and fillers are used to plump up the areas that have lost their volume.
  • The application areas of Botox are usually the forehead and around the eyes, that is, the upper parts of the face. Fillers can be applied on the lips, around the mouth, cheeks, and some scars.
  • Botox relaxes the muscles, while the filling process fills the gaps after volume loss.
  • The effectiveness of Botox application is 7-8 months on average, this period varies from person to person. In fillers, permanence can be seen from 6 months to 2 years.
