People desire to have a proportional nose according to the aesthetic perception of today. However, many people weren’t born with their dream nose or their nose shapes were later deformed due to a strike. As this can be a problem in the term of aesthetic appearance, the disorders in the internal structure of the nose can also cause serious difficulties in breathing. Septorhinoplasty or functional nose surgery is a nasal surgery that allows the patients to breathe more easily by eliminating the deviation of the nose.
Sometimes, the results from the surgery may not be satisfactory for the patients. The most common complications in septoplasty are nasal congestion or the remaining difficulty in breathing after the surgery. These issues may occur due to excessive reduction of the nose during the operation, the collapse of the nasal walls or inadequate correction of the deviation. Revision septorhinoplasty is needed to solve these problems.
After the first surgery, it is necessary to wait for a while to decide whether a secondary operation is needed. This period can be between 6 months and 1 year depending on the patient’s condition. However, if the patient can’t breathe properly after the surgery or if another serious functional problem is encountered, the surgery should be planned and the action should be taken immediately. Therefore, it’s very important to stick to the postoperative controls and be in contact with your surgeon. Do not forget that a nose job surgery is a long process that includes not only the operation but also the pre and postoperative examinations.
Secondary septoplasty may be a harder process for the patients. Every patient wishes to achieve a successful result with a single surgery. But even if you experience such a setback, you should not be demoralized. Although it’s a fact that the second operation is more complicated than the first one, the success rate is high. Psychological preparation of patients plays an important role before the surgery, therefore, I do my best to explain the process in detail in order not to leave any unanswered questions in their head.
The operation time varies depending on the condition of each patient but it takes approximately 2 or 3 hours. Patients are discharged after staying one night at the hospital. There will be some swelling and bruises around the nose area after the surgery, which will decrease and begin to disappear within a week. Using a higher pillow during sleep will help to reduce them more easily.
Recovery after the revision septorhinoplasty is similar to the first surgery. Patients can get back to their jobs after one week or 10 days. It is of great importance during the recovery to examine patients regularly and evaluate the changes in the nose.
