8 Things to Consider After Otoplasty

Post Date: 10/21/2022

Otoplasty, also known as prominent ear surgery, is performed to improve the appearance of the auricle and make it look natural.

This operation is usually performed in early childhood, but adults also may not be satisfied with the appearance of their ears and may have otoplasty. In particular, asymmetrical ears, ears that are too large for the person's head, or ears damaged as a result of an accident are among the reasons why otoplasty is preferred.

When compared with other surgical procedures, it can be said that the recovery period is relatively comfortable after ear aesthetics. Nonetheless, certain precautions could be taken for a smooth recovery period in order to speed up the process. Below you can find 8 post-otoplasty precautions to be considered, which will help reduce the risk of complications.

Avoid Touching The Ears

It is necessary not to touch the ears much during the healing period after otoplasty. Care should be taken to ensure the ears remain in their new post-surgery positions and recovery is not delayed.

Not Scratching The Incision Sites

Immediately after otoplasty, it can be seen that the incision sites might begin to itch, as in many other procedures. This is also a sign that healing has begun. In order not to disrupt the process, touching the incisions should be avoided.

Healthy Eating

A good diet is essential for maintaining general health. However, especially during recovery periods, the body needs the right nutrients and vitamins more than ever. If hard food bother the patients, they can be consume soft food for a few days after the ear surgery.

Not Smoking

As is seen with almost all surgical procedures, smoking or exposure to cigarette smoke can delay the healing of otoplasty wounds. It is recommended to avoid smoking for a few weeks following the surgery.

Keeping Head High

One of the natural symptoms in the healing process is bloating. Keeping the head in a high position during sleep would reduce swelling. Extra pillows can be placed under the head for support. In addition, the patient should try not to bend over in the bed while sleeping to reduce the risk of bleeding.

Using a Bandage

After otoplasty, the ears are first dressed. Following an average of one week, the medical dressing is replaced with a headband to cover the incisions. By doing so, ears are protected from external factors. Patients often wear this headband continuously for the first two weeks, and only at nights for about a month.

Avoiding Heavy Physical Activities

Another thing to consider after ear aesthetics is to avoid heavy and exhausting exercises. After the surgeon’s permission, the patients can go back to their regular exercise routine.

Ear Discharge

It is normal for some fluid to come out of the ears during the first week after the operation. This liquid may be dark in color and thick. If the discharge is observed, only the outer part of the ear can be carefully cleaned.

It is very important to comply with these considerations after otoplasty and not to go beyond the surgeon's instruction in order to have a comfortable recovery period.
