How Is Deviated Septum Treated?

The nose is the organ that undertakes respiratory function, which is the most vital function of our body. The bone and cartilage structure that divides the nasal cavity into two is called the nasal septum. If the nasal septum has deviated, individuals have trouble breathing comfortably.  These issues may reduce the quality of their lives.

The deviated shape of the nasal septum may make it impossible for the patient to breathe in some cases by completely closing the nostrils. The deviated septum problem may occur congenitally or later, due to the effect of an external strike. It may also cause complaints such as chronic nasal obstruction, postnasal drip, and snoring. Septoplasty, (deviated septum surgery) is the ultimate solution that eliminates all these problems and increases the quality of the patients’ lives.

What Is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is the name given to the surgical procedure that fixes the deviated nasal septum. The main aim of this operation is to take the structures that prevent breathing in the nose and position them in the right place. Septoplasty focuses on the functional problems of the nose and it doesn’t have aesthetic concerns while operating this, unlike rhinoplasty (nose job). However, both external and internal structures of the nose can be fixed at the same time by performing septoplasty and rhinoplasty together, according to the patients’ demands.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes around 2 and half hours. Our patients are kept under monitoring for one day after the operation. We check their blood values and give them painkillers to control the possibility of postoperative pain. They are discharged the next day if no complications are encountered.

Recovery after Septoplasty

Patients should nicely protect their noses for the following 4-6 weeks afterward. During this period, keep in mind that you shouldn’t massage or even touch your nose. Take a week off from work or school and spend this time resting at home. You are allowed to do light exercises after the second week, but strenuous activities are still prohibited. You can wear eyeglasses after the septoplasty.

You may have trouble breathing due to the tampons placed inside your nose after the surgery. These tampons ensure that the nose takes its new shape and does not deform. Minor nosebleeds may be experienced until the tampons are removed after the surgery. You may still feel that you cannot breathe easily in the first weeks but don’t forget that you are still in the recovery process. The full recovery will take at least 4 weeks but your life won’t be restricted as you’re allowed to do your daily routines unless they are too tiring. Please note that you need to visit us for routine check-ups several times a year after the surgery.

You will be able to breathe with more comfort than ever before and increase your quality of life after the deviated septum surgery. If you consider having rhinoplasty surgery, contact us right away to get a free consultancy service from Prof. Dr. Selçuk İnanlı
