Septoplasty and Rhinoplasty

Septoplasty and Rhinoplasty are some of the most popular operations in plastic surgery today. Rhinoplasty is performed on patients who want to change the appearance of their noses. On the other hand, septoplasty is a functional nose surgery. The main purpose of septoplasty is to provide a higher quality of life to the patients by fixing all functions in the nose.

What Is Septoplasty?

Functional nasal surgery is called septorhinoplasty or septoplasty, which is applied to patients who experience nasal congestion due to bone curvature, flesh growth and consequently intranasal stenosis. Unlike rhinoplasty, no procedure is performed to make a change on the external appearance of the nose during a septoplasty operation. The main goal of septoplasty is to enable the patient to breathe more comfortably and healthily. It fixes the curvatures in the middle parts of the nose, known as septum deviation, which makes breathing difficult.

The internal and external structures of the nose are evaluated in the first examination before the surgery. It is checked by computed nasal tomography results, whether there are problems such as septum deviation or turbinate hypertrophy that prevent breathing. A detailed evaluation is crucial in order to solve the problem radically with the right operation.

Septoplasty takes about 3 hours. Tapes, silicone plaque and plasters are used at the end of the surgery, to maintain the new shape of the nose, prevent excessive bleeding and swelling and provide healing by keeping the septum in the midline. They are usually taken out within the week after the surgery.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, unlike septoplasty, is a procedure performed for purely aesthetic purposes. The nose is the most striking part of our face. A big, asymmetrical or arched nose can negatively affect a person’s social life and self-confidence even if it doesn’t harm her/his physical health. However, you can get a proportional and straight nose that will suit your face shape with rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is planned and operated specifically for each patient after a long process of evaluation. The operation gives a new shape to the nose by the bone and cartilage roof. The main aim of rhinoplasty is to achieve the best and the most natural result that the original nose shape allows.

We prefer the open rhinoplasty technique since it gives more control to the surgeon during the operation. This technique shows the nasal septum and problematic areas clearly. The operation, which takes about 4,5-5 hours, is completed with a small stitch between the nostrils. These stitch marks will become more and more indistinct over time.

For female children to undergo surgery age limit is 16-17 while for male children lower age limit is 17-18. Their mental maturity is expected as well as their biological development. Any patients with general good health conditions would make an eligible candidate for those surgeries. However, if there is a major deformity that affects the patient’s health or social life, the surgery can be performed earlier.

In short, the main difference between rhinoplasty and septoplasty is that rhinoplasty is applied to change the external appearance of the nose, whereas septoplasty is applied to change the internal structure. These two operations can also be performed together, if necessary. However, you must have realistic expectations to be satisfied with your surgery results.
