Revision Rhinoplasty

The nose is one of the most striking parts of the human’s face. It is everyone’s dream to have a straight nose. Therefore, nose surgeries performed with various aesthetic or health concerns are quite common. Many patients can achieve their dream nose with the right doctor.

Should You Be Afraid of Revision Rhinoplasty?

Patients who can’t achieve the nose they dream of after the first surgery, or who need to get a revision rhinoplasty due to another issue are usually afraid of being obliged to repeat the operation. However, revision rhinoplasty which is performed in one out of every four patient is a more difficult process, but gives successful results to a great extent.

Revision surgeries are recommended to be performed by the doctor who had also performed the first surgery. This is preferred because the doctor knows the procedure best as he had performed it himself, and also knows the patient better. The doctor will help the patient to be psychologically prepared for the operation, relieve his/her fears, and explain the necessity of the revision. If there is a doctor-related mistake or disagreements with the patient, it may be better to choose another doctor. In that case, it is crucial for the new doctor to be comprehensively informed about the first operation and be competent in his/her profession. Don’t forget that the doctor choice is incredibly important. Be sure to entrust yourself to an experienced surgeon with a high success rate.

When Is Revision Rhinoplasty Required?

Studies have shown that 25% of patients require revision rhinoplasty. As stated above, it is usually demanded due to aesthetic reasons. What patients expect from a nose surgery is to have a straight nose which naturally fits the rest of their face. As there is no ideal nose shape that fits every face type, communication between the doctor and the patient plays an important part in the process. Since the main purpose of rhinoplasty is to create a nose shape that patients will be happy with, the most important criterion for the revision apart from health issues is the patient’s preferences.

In some instances, patients request a revision rhinoplasty before sufficient time has passed after the first surgery. However, if the patient is unsatisfied with the new shape of the nose and not suffering from a functional problem, it is necessary to wait for 6-12 months to see the final results in order to determine whether a revision is needed. Any revision performed before that amount of time is less likely to succeed. But if there is a deformation such as drooping or moving aside in the new bone structure, a second operation may be considered 3 months after the first surgery.
